July carries a unique spiritual atmosphere — a month where the long post‑solstice days seem to illuminate both the outer world and our inner landscape. For many Spiritualists, this is a time when intuition sharpens, healing energy feels abundant, and messages from Spirit come through with a gentle clarity.

Across cultures, July is also a month of ancestor honouring. Traditions like Japan’s Shichigatsu O‑Bon and the Zoroastrian Fravardigan remind us that love continues beyond physical life and that our ancestors remain active, caring presences. July’s brightness becomes an invitation to connect — not through darkness or mystery, but through light, gratitude, and remembrance.

A simple practice for this month: Sit in natural daylight, breathe slowly, and imagine the light surrounding you. Invite clarity, invite connection, and simply receive.

In July of 1888, the Boston trance medium Leonora E. Piper sat for a series of sittings that would become some of the most studied in Spiritualist history. Among the sitters was a man identified in SPR records as “Mr. Hart,” who had recently lost his brother unexpectedly.

During the sitting, Piper entered her trance state and her control, “Phinuit,” began speaking rapidly. Without being given any information, Phinuit described Hart’s brother’s personality, his mannerisms, and even a private nickname used only between the two men. Hart later wrote that the nickname had never been spoken aloud in public.

The most striking moment came when Phinuit paused and said:

“He shows me a small silver locket. You have it in your left pocket.”

Hart was stunned. He had indeed placed his brother’s locket in his left coat pocket that morning, intending to ask about it if the opportunity arose.

SPR investigators later confirmed the accuracy of the details and noted that Piper had no prior access to Hart, his family, or the locket. William James, considered to be the father of the American Psychological Association, personally investigated Piper for nearly 20 years, called her “the one white crow” — the single case that proved not all mediums could be dismissed as fraudulent.
