Each August, many Asian cultures observe the Festival of Hungry Ghosts, a time when the veil between the living and spirit worlds is believed to thin. Rooted in Chinese Buddhist and Taoist traditions, the festival honors wandering or neglected spirits through offerings of food, incense, and light. Families set out tables of nourishment, float lanterns on water to guide souls home, and perform acts of charity to express compassion for unseen beings.

For Spiritualists, this festival beautifully reflects our own belief in spirit continuity and loving service. It reminds us that kindness and remembrance reach beyond the physical world, affirming that every soul—seen or unseen—deserves care and peace.

This month we celebrate the bicentennial annversary of Andrew Jackson Davis, born on August 11, 1826, in Bloomfield, New York. He is widely regarded as one of the foundational thinkers of Modern Spiritualism. Often called the “Seer of Poughkeepsie” or the “John the Baptist of Spiritualism,” Davis helped shape the movement long before the Fox Sisters’ famous Hydesville rappings in 1848. 

Davis grew up in poverty with limited formal education. Despite this, he displayed unusual sensitivity and clairvoyant abilities from a young age. His spiritual awakening intensified in his teens, culminating in powerful trance states in which he delivered teachings on nature, spirit, and the human soul. One of Davis’s most remarkable demonstrations occurred when, in trance, he accurately described the anatomy and illness of a patient—knowledge far beyond his schooling. His clairvoyant diagnoses and healing insights earned him recognition as a gifted medium and healer. These experiences formed the basis of his later work. 

Davis continued writing, lecturing, and healing throughout his life. He married twice, raised a family, and remained committed to improving social conditions, advocating for abolition, women’s rights, and educational reform. He passed into spirit on January 13, 1910, leaving behind more than 30 books and a legacy that continues to shape Spiritualist thought including:

• Philosopher of Spiritualism: His book The Principles of Nature (1847) outlined ideas of spirit evolution and universal harmony that became the foundation of Spiritualist thought. The Great Harmonia (1850–1861) is a multi‑volume series presents Davis’s teachings on healing, psychology, ethics, and the spirit world. It became essential reading for early Spiritualists and metaphysical thinkers.

• Healing Pioneer: Davis promoted magnetic and spiritual healing, inspiring generations of Spiritualist healers.

• Lyceum Movement Founder: He encouraged education for children and adults through Spiritualist Lyceums—programs still active today.

• Visionary Prophet: Months before the Fox Sisters’ famous rappings, Davis predicted a new era of spirit communication that would unite science, philosophy, and religion.
