Historically, Spiritualist circles have used September as a time for:

• Renewal of mediumship practice, aligning with the season’s quieting energy
• Ancestor honouring, as harvest traditions remind us of continuity across generations
• Inner development, focusing on intuition, meditation, and healing
• Community gathering, celebrating the “harvest” of spiritual growth from the year so far

Born on September 2, 1823 Emma Hardinge Britten stands as one of the most influential figures in the history of Modern Spiritualism — a medium, orator, historian, and organizer whose work helped shape the movement’s philosophy and public identity.
Born in London, Emma displayed psychic sensitivity from childhood, experiencing spontaneous trance states and clairaudient impressions. After emigrating to the United States in the 1850s, she became involved with the emerging Spiritualist movement and quickly distinguished herself through her trance lectures, which were delivered with remarkable eloquence and philosophical depth. Audiences often described her speech as flowing with a force and clarity that seemed beyond ordinary human capacity.
Her contributions include:
• Trance Lectures: Delivered across the U.S. and U.K., covering ethics, spirit communication, social reform, and metaphysical philosophy.
• Historical Documentation: Her landmark book Modern American Spiritualism (1870) remains one of the most important early histories of the movement.
• Organizational Leadership: She helped establish the First Spiritual Temple in Boston.
• The “Seven Principles”: Emma is widely credited with articulating the foundational principles that later became the basis for the National Spiritualist Association’s teachings.
